Subject: (A) Imagewriter cable instead of Phonenet?
Answering to the question of Glenn Tiffert (TIFFERTG@ACFcluster.NYU.EDU), I
made such kind of Appleshare connection between two PB100, one with system
7.0.1 (as server) and the other with system 6.0.7 (as user). The cable I
used was an Stylewriter cable, and there was no difference compared when
using Phonenet connectors. I guess you can use as well system 7.1 and
Imagewriter cable. I have no notice that this use of a printer cable could
damage a Macintosh.

Subject: (Q) Apple File Share Daemon
I'm looking for the Apple File Share(ing) Daemon. It was
referred to in the documentation for ARNS (A Remote
Networking Server) (towards the end of the document.)
In essence, though, what I'm looking for is a server pro-
cess that will allow one to "mount" a Unix partition (a
Sun workstation) on a Macintosh that has an ethernet card
(but no MacFTP), or vice versa. In addition it should (al-
though it's not a major requirement) allow one to print
>From the Mac to the Sun workstation.
Any help is greatly appreciated. If I get enough responses,
I will summarize to Info-Mac.
Thanks,

In response to the question about making fonts in a font menu
"appear" in their own font, I don't think you need a special
extension or init -- it's my understanding that simply holding
down the option key while selecting the font menu will
accomplish this as well.... (I don't know if this is just a

Jeff,
- Remove the finder out of your Sys6 system folder, so the installer ahs
to create a new System folder for 7.x
- Start form your installtion disk no. 1
- Then copy all your extensions, fonts, etc. into your new system folder.
In most cases this works. It depends also whether the version of the
hard disk formatter/driver you have installed is working with System 7.
If not you need to reformat the HD and install the new drivers. I
personally recommend SilverLining. Any version greater than 5.31 works
with Sys7, latest version is 5.42 as far as I know.

Subject: About Michel,Michele,Michelle
In order to add a Mac flavour to the discussion about Michel/Michele
let me point out that Michele should be written in French with an 'accent
grave' on the first e (i.e.ASCII=143, Mich`ele). This raises the following
question:
If one does string comparaisons with Michele and Michoui, Michele will come
first (correct answer),but if one compares Mich`ele and Michoui, Michoui will
come first (wrong answer). This is so because ASCII `e (143) > e (101).
My question is the following: How can I create a program yielding the correct
answer without having to change all the accentuated letters? Is there a way
to invoke the sorting ressources appearing in Apple CDEV 'International'.
Thanks for your comments.

You can do that and much more with QuicKeys from CE Software.
QuicKeys has a QK extension called Choosy that allows to select a printer,
turn background printing on or off, and notifies you (if you so desire) of the
change via a dialog box. You can set the timer for that shortcut so that it
executes

Subject: Background printing of Postscript
In V11N002 Theodore Lee (tmplee@TIS.COM) asks about background printing of
PostScript files for the second time. I hesitated to mention a kludge
solution to his problem, but seeing no good solutions mentioned by
anyone I'll pass it on anyway. The recipe is:
Open the PostScript file with Microsoft Word (either V4 or V5)
Select the whole document
Go to STYLE (in the Format menu in Word 5)
Click on New Style, then enter the word PostScript in the style-name
field, it is case sensitive
Apply the style
Word will inform you that this is a predefined style, and ask if you
want to redefine it. Say no.
Thats it, you can now have Word print the document. Since it is being
queued by Word rather than either of the Apple laser utilities, Print
Monitor is perfectly happy to let it print in the background.
There is one caveat. This method loads the printer with both the Word
Postscript Dict *and* whatever Dict is contained in the file you are
printing. This can overwhelm the memory of minimum-memory printers.
This problem can be minimized (but not eliminated) by resetting the printer
prior to the print job to erase any downloaded fonts left by previous
jobs.
Good luck.

Subject: Big remote partitions (Q)
When a Macintosh is connected to a big (> 2Gb) remote partition, the Finder
gives wrong information about the size of and free space on the remote
partition.
As far as I can see, this is because the Finder calculates the free space
and disk size as a signed double (31 bits + a sign). If the Finder used a
unsigned double the problem would turn up again at 4Gb.
I have just run into the problem, because a friend of mine wants to use a
very big partition on a SUN from his Macintosh.
If the server software on the SUN works correctly, his only problem should
be that the disk information in Finder is incorrect, even if the size of
the disk is greater than 4Gb. The server should take care of the rest.
Does anyone know if this is correct ?
Have anyone tried putting a 2-4 Gb disk directly on a Macintosh ?
Thanks

>new...alphabet to me!
On the 68000 line of CPU's any Assembly instruction that begins with an
A (eg A030) will cause an exception (kind of like f-line's only those deal
with
floating point instructions). But rather than dropping dead (meaning you get
a bomb dialog box), it uses the rest of the instruction (the next 1 1/2 bytes
roughly) to index into a jump table. Normally this jump table points to all
of the standard apple functions to create a window, read from a file, draw the
desktop. Well what an industrious programmer can do is change one of the
values in this jump table so that instead of jumping to the standard apple
function it jumps to his function instead. So when the CPU hits an a-trap
(any instruction begining with an A, (A, a-trap pretty clever eh?)), that
indexes to the trap he "patched" it calls his function, which then does what
ever he wants it to. When he is done he can either return (which is what is
most likely done in deskpict), or he can call the standard function (which was
in the jump table to start with). In actuality there may be several inits
which patch the same trap over and over, as long as they call the value they
found in the jump table when they are done (or before they do anything), every
thing will work fine. GetNextEvent is popular for many init's to patch
because it is a way to get some CPU time on a regular basis. But in the case
of such an patch you must call the original function, because you still want
the standard functionality of GetNextEvent.
Of course alot of the details are left out here. It really isn't quite
as simple as all instructions that start with an A (there are different
classes
of a traps, called toolbox, and os traps), there are also selectors that
can be set in the instruction, and so on. Also I have only periferally
delt with A-traps so some of this might be a little wrong.
if you want some more information, just let me know.

Dear Netters,
We are in the process of buying an HP Laserjet 4M printer for our

significant advantage over Appletalk. I know ethernet is faster. All the

lot of traffic on the zone and printing to our existing NTX is very slow.
Is there anything I will have to know about configuring it? Will all the

switch to another zone? Also We are in the process of moving from phase 1

Subject: EtherTalk Driver for Racal Interlan EtherTalk Card (A)
In v11 #4 Patrick Kwok asks:
> Do anyone know where can I download the EtherTalk driver for System 7.0
> of the Racal Interlan EtherTalk card?
I don't know if it can be downloaded, but I do know how to make the Racal
InterLan MacConnect NuBus Ethernet card work under System 7.0 and 7.0.1.
If anyone does find a legitimate source for the real thing, please let me
know.
Meanwhile, here's what works.
1. Install System 7 using the Customize feature to install the EtherTalk
software even though the Mac doesn't think you have an Ethernet interface.
2. Run ResEdit on a copy of the System file. You'll see a resource type of
DRVR. Open the DRVR resources. You should see a DRVR resource with a number
of 127 and a name of Driver: ".ENET". This resource will be rather small
compared to the Racal Interlan driver, I think its size is about 138
(bytes?).
3. Open another file in ResEdit: the System file on your System 6 Racal
Interlan installer disk. Open the DRVR resources, select the (much larger)
DRVR resource 127, and copy it.
4. Select the DRVR window for the copy of your hard disk's System file.
5. Paste the bigger DRVR 127 into the window, clicking "Yes" when ResEdit
asks if you want to replace the identically numbered resource.
6. Save the edited System.
7. Remove the original System file from your System folder (don't trash it
quite yet) and place the edited System file in the System folder. Name it
System if it isn't already so named.
8. Restart your Mac. If everything worked OK, you should now be able to
select the EtherTalk driver in the Network control panel.
9. Sometimes this doesn't work right. I haven't quite figured out why, but
what happens is that you get what looks like a modal dialog box that just
flickers on your screen and you have to cycle power or hit the reset switch
to get your Mac back. If this happens, restart with a floppy and put the
original System back in the System folder. This just happened on a
co-worker's Mac IIfx, and I finally got a clean install by using the
Network Products Installer 1.3 disk, available from ftp.apple.com, to
install EtherTalk in step 1 above instead of the regular System 7
installer.
Note that once you get it working, it seems to work just fine, and hasn't
broken for me in a year of running System 7. I haven't tried this with
System 7.1, but I think it will probably work there, too.

does the cartridge come with all 4 meaning that all 4 must be replaced at

How close does the results from the printer come to PANATONE colours?

MiniCad since its inception, and I can't praise it enough. The new version
has so many great features that it would be hard to mention them all in

like a complete rewrite of previous versions. I have been using it for
architectural drawings, and mapping applications. The people at Graphsoft
have been responsive and helpful when called. The price is right compared
to other CAD applications with similar features. I have used it on a 2mb
portable in the field with no problems, printing to a StyleWriter. All in
all I am very satisfied with the product and the company. A nice feature
in the new version is being able to place transparent windows and open
doors in walls, and when you remove them, the wall returns to a solid.
You can also walk through or fly over a 3D view. There is a MiniCad

Brett, in the past week this has happened to me and a friend. It is indeed
caused by the old batteries, probably combined with the cold winter weather
pushing a weak battery over the edge. To keep going temporarily, I blew some
hot air from a hair dryer through the vents for a few seconds and my Mac
started up fine.
My friend got his batteries at a local Frye's store under the part number
TL-2150/P for about 6 bucks each (you need 2). This battery type has leads
which he soldered onto the old clipped battery leads. I believe Apple also
sells a battery holder kit for about $20 that accepts batteries without leads,
but it hardly seems worthwhile since it is unlikely you will ever replace them
again. The batteries are on the motherboard underneath the hard drive/floppy
drive brackets.

Subject: MacTCP pricing/liscencing (C)
Just a stream of unconsciousness thing:
Considering the rather painful new pricing/liscencing policies of Apple for
MacTCP, especially where schools and such free/shareware tools as Eudora &
Fetch are concerned, why doesn't some enterprising young (or old)
programmer out there set about making a competing product? It seems to me
that there is definitely a shareware market out there for a MacTCP
competitor. I am willing to bet that a body could probably find many
people facing that current $100 price tag willing to pay as much as $20-50
for an alternative(and yes, I realize that $50 is STEEP for shareware.). I
cannot believe that such a project is beyond the scope of the same people
out there who have brought such gems as Eudora, Zterm, Fetch, NCSA Telnet
and about a billion other non-communications tools to life. Certainly it
has to be easier than making TCP/IP drivers on PC Klones which have far
less standard ethernet implementations than macs.
Just a thought. Discussion?

That's a great ethic to live by, but like "honesty is the best policy,"
people should not depend on others to always follow it. What can be
learned from this (and most of us know--I realize that I'm probably
preaching to the choir here) that we can't depend on what others tell
us about computers to be correct all the time.
The nice thing about these lists is that any misinformation will
probably be corrected. As a result, we should not be so afraid
to misinform that we are afraid to answer. Most people seem to be
careful to mention when they may be a on thin ice when answering
a question, which is probably a much better policy than not answering

and both with and without virtual memeory support, I get only the
answer "Program aborted, system fault number 90 (not correctly translated

I tried picts from Photoshop 2.01 as grey-scale or as bitmap, 1Bit,
8 Bit, and 8 Bit System color scale. Only the 8 Bit System color scale
with 15 and 17 KB could be loaded (only with virtual memory of + 6 MB and
4 MB for the Metamorphisis program). But when I choosed a few pionts
and "Do Meta...." from the Menu, I got the same system fault.
I forgot to say that I have only a 12" greyscale-monitor.

Viruses cannot be Trojan Horses. A virus, by definition, replicates
itself by attaching itself to a host application. Trojan Horses, by
definition don't. Worms, by definition, replicate themselves, not
attaching to other programs. If you would have known this you would not
have said what you did.
Thus Trojan Horses do NOT spread very far since they tend to kill themselves
off. So, aside from mentioning it, most people have little to worry. This
is why I do not go through the expense of postcard notification (on the
order of $1,500) for Trojan Horses. FYI, Disinfectant doesn't catch ANY
Trojan Horses for the same reason: they don't spread themselves.
If a Trojan *implants* a virus then that is another story and it treated
like a virus (witness MBDF).
I guess you never have taken a look at VD since the search strings for
what it detects are plainly visible. VD has always detected all the
viruses and Trojan Horses (no worms yet) that could attack a Mac and
has been doing this since 1985.
Do note that the ONLY change in my policy is that registered users now get
notified directly (if desired) instead of publically. My policy for Trojan
Horses has ALWAYS been the same: electronic notification only.

This isn't quite correct. You can send your undeveloped film or negatives
to a Photo CD processing center for scanning and placement on to a CD.
Right now, there are only 13 or 14 places in the country that do Photo
CD processing. Call Kodak at 1-800-242-2424, ext 36 to find the the
lab nearest you that has a PhotoCD system.
You get back on your CD 5 copies of each photo at different resolutions:
Size (pixels)
Wallet 128 x 192
Snapshot 256 x 384
Standard 512 x 768
Large 1024 x 1536
Poster 2048 x 3072
Costs for the transfers are obscenely cheap. If you send them undeveloped
film, each scan will cost anywhere for $ .75 to $1.00. Sending them
negs is a little more expensive; the scans cost anywhere from $1.50
to $2.00.
The magzine I work for has just recently gone all digital with our pre-press.
We scan all black and white photos in-house and send out all color photos
to our service bureau for scanning on a Linotype-Hell drum scanner. They
send us back low res TIFFs of the color scans for placement. We send
them the entire magazine (Quark X-Press document) on an optical disk. They
print it directly to negatives (4 up) on a Lintotronic 530. All color
separations are done on a Linotronic color workstation using proprietary
separation software.
As soon as we get our CD-Rom drive (the end of this month) we're going to
experiment with using Photo CD for our editorial color photos. Our covers
will still have to be scanned at the bureau, as we get them as large format
transparencies from our photographer in Nashville. Kodak claims that they'll
be able to do large format negs and transparencies sometime in '93 though.
Right now you're limited to 35mm slides or negs.
If anyone is interested, I can post the results of our experiments.

Some US companies - Microsoft (sigh) is a good example, market their products
in Europe at reasonable prices, and provide good customer support. From
France, I can key in the MS number in England, followed by the touch tone code
for a particular MS product, and get instant help. When I had a problem with
Word-4 on my Quadra, they sent me a new disk for free within 3 days.
I have in front of me the French MacWarehouse catalogue to compare with
their US price list. Prices for MS products are reasonable (Word5=$374 HT
for the translated version). 1 MB SIMMS are $40 from MacWarehouse France.
Prices for Adobe and Aldus products are crazy by comparison. Pagemaker 4.2
and Illustrator 3.2 are over $1000 each plus 18% tax. I have had dealings
with their European offices (not distributers), and they are disorganised and
hopeless compared to MicroSoft. I can understand why they have to charge so
much !
After months of faxing the Adobe offices in the Netherlands and Scotland,
I finally sent back my original Illustrator disks to Adobe in the US, with my
credit card number and a short letter telling them where to put them if they
didn't want to upgrade my US version. I got the upgrade by return air mail !

Well, I found that in Sys 7.01 + Tuneup 1.1.1, Excel does run with lots
of fonts (ie > 20) but very sluggishly, under the following conditions:
1) VM is on (I have a IIsi with 5 MB RAM)
2) Fonts are stored in suitcases, not installed directly in the System file
and opened using Suitcase or some similar utility.
The symptom: excessive paging, opening the add on manager takes about 5
minutes (!!).
It seems like Excel does not like fonts that are not installed in the system
file. I tried putting lots of fonts into the system file, and Excel runs
normally. Once the number of fonts opened using Suitcase exceeds 20 or so
families, the performance degrades rapidly. (I divided the fonts into three
suitcases, with about 20 families in the first suitcase).
I haven't tried checking with Tech support. Figured that the VM + suitcase
configuration isn't really a common setup, and previous posting on the net
resulted in about two people reporting similar symptoms. I guess now that
Sys. 7.1 puts all the fonts in external suitcases, this'll be a real issue.
There is definitely something wrong with the way Excel handle large number
of fonts. The question is what's the problem, and when will Microsoft fix it?

I don't know if "my solution" would work - I have no opportunity to try
it - but here it is.
The REGISTERED shareware version of DiskDup+ 2.1 (or later?) from
Roger Bates can mount disk images on a Mac's desktop - They appear just
like your harddisk or any floppy inserted in a drive. Do this in your
computer running 7.x, enable sharing of these disks and get to them
>From the SE/30 with Sys 6.x. If they are mounted as remote volumes, it
might work. I don't promise, however.
By the way - DiskDup+ can not do that if it is not registered. You'll get
a code after registration which you would enter once, and then all
features are enabled and the "please register"-message will no longer come
up. Roger Bates is somewhere in Oregon - don't at present remember the
exact address, but if you don't find it, I'll search my pile of diskettes
at home. I know it is there SOMEWHERE.
Let me know if it worked.

A good way to have some fun with this is to get a copy of the
Postscript Tutorial and Cookbook (the "Blue Book") from Addison-Wesley
and program the Postscript code yourself. The book has many
examples of how to do exactly what you are looking for. All it takes
is a text editor, the LaserWriter Font Utility (to send the Postscript

short (ten or twenty lines) programs from the examples.
It's pretty good entertainment, and you might find yourself creating
some very original and striking graphics.

WordPerfect 5.1 for the IBM. I could use the XTND translator to v4.2, but
that doesn't convert Italics or Point size changes. Since I'm using Apple
File Exchange anyway, I could deal with a Claris Works <--> WordPerfect PC 5.0
translator. In short I need either an XTND or AFE translator for ClarisWorks
word processing to WordPerfect PC 5.1 (or 5.0--same file format).

Subject: WORM CD-ROM
I am seeking information about WORM CD-ROM products such as the
Kodak PCD Writer 200. The possibility of "burning" a CD-ROM for under
$50 is quite exciting. It would be a great backup approach and a good
way to store Lab Data. Do any netters have experience with such products
and the associated software? Questions arise as to maximizing routines,
compatibility, and error checking. Should one develop a disk that is a
"best seller", how easy is it to use the WORM disk as a master for multiple
copies at a commercial pressing house? Any information will be appreciated.

Subject: YACC and LEX for the Mac?
I am looking for MAC programs that perform the same functions as LEX and YACC
in the Unix environment. They should be usable with Think C.
Thanks!
